I feel nothing when I see their bloodied faces. Each of them holds up a sign that says what I very clearly asked for in my instructions: “I’m sorry for being a fucking asshole." There is fear in their eyes, and I slurp it up with a spoon as I roll through each picture.

I can imagine being there – one of my men breaking into their house when they’re home alone and teaching them respect in my name. It was a small offense to laugh at Tessa, but it was an offense nonetheless. My instructions were clear – no broken bones, no knives. Just a good, old beatdown and a warning.

I maintain the satisfied smile on my face, but it lowers when I remember Tessa’s embarrassment – her face marred in shame. I grunt and slide back in my chair, looking up at the ceiling and begging for mercy from the irritation I feel.

Our next “date night” is approaching. Since that night, Tessa and I have only done our one obligatory text each day. The texts have mostly included Tessa sending me things about her day and me sending back sarcastic things – mostly little quips about how she is the queen of the underworld.

She is still on my mind as I go about my day, business meetings to luncheons to speeches. Briony guides me as always, her iPad controlling each moment of my time. She still looks at me like she’s waiting for me to want her again, and I have no way to tell her that I’m contending with a crazy person and it won’t be happening, at least for a while. Each day, Briony still wears different outfits, different lip colors, trying to get my attention. And each day, I ignore it – knowing that my life would be ruined if I did anything outside of what Tessa and I agreed.

Today Briony and I enter the elevator and end up in a boardroom on the 50th floor. As she swings open the door, Briony repeats what the meeting is for (“Jupiter all-staff”), and I walk inside the room, only realizing at the last moment what I’m about to see.

“Good afternoon, everyone," I say as a greeting, moving to the head of the table, where Briony sits to my right. The room is filled with around 40 people, and the chatter almost immediately stops when I sit down. The only thing interrupting the silence is giggling at the opposite end of the table. I look to see who it is, and my jaw automatically clenches when my eyes land on the two figures.

Tessa is giggling under her breath, drawing attention to the back of the room, and as I stare, people turn their heads to see what I’m looking at. Today Tessa wears her usual uniform, but half of her hair is up and the other half lays down, brushing her shoulders. She has a huge smile on her face and her arm propped on the
